Over the centuries, the inn has undergone several transformations. It transitioned from a vicar's dwelling to a pub and eventually to a guesthouse. Each transformation added a new layer to its already complex narrative.
John and Caroline Humphries
John Humphries, who bought the building in 1968, played a pivotal role in shaping its modern identity as a hub for paranormal investigations. Today, his daughter, Caroline Humphries, continues to embrace the inn's reputation as one of Britain's most haunted locations.
Ghost Stories and Legends
The Ley Lines and Pagan Burial Ground
The inn is situated on Ley Lines that trace directly back to Stonehenge. Before the inn was even built, the site was a Pagan burial ground, adding another layer of mystical energy to the location.

Among the many spirits that haunt this inn, the Witch's Room stands out. It is said to be haunted by a witch who was burned at the stake in the 1500s. Then there's the Bishop's Room, considered the most haunted room in the inn, frequented by the spirits of several bishops and even dark monks.
The latter is said to have been an area of rituals, worship and other dark arts.
Ritual Sacrifices and Devil Worship
John Humphries, the previous owner, claimed to have found evidence of ritual sacrifices and devil worship on the inn's grounds. He even discovered the skeletal remains of children under the staircase, along with broken daggers.
Our Personal Paranormal Experiences
Our Visit
During our recent visit to the Ancient Ram Inn, we had the pleasure of being accompanied by Tracy Simpson, an exceptional researcher who organised the trip. The moment we stepped into the inn, we could feel the palpable atmosphere that surrounded us, making it an unforgettable experience.
Prior to the visit, Greg and I had conducted an overnight investigation at the Poltergeist House and Museum owned by Ghosts Of Britain in Rotherham. This was our second night on the road, and we were looking forward to it with great anticipation.
Evidence Gathered
We captured compelling evidence, including an audio clip that mentioned a baby in the fireplace and GS2 readings that indicated atmospheric changes. These findings could very well be the echoes of the inn's haunted history.
We captured static on a locked-off camcorder audio, along with various audible phenomena that we managed to record on video. At one point, we felt the Inn shake, and heard mysterious voices, one of which shook John to his core. It was truly compelling, to say the least.
Team Members' Experiences
Our technical team member, John White, experienced an inexplicable shift in atmosphere near the Bishop's Room. The air grew heavy, and the temperature dropped suddenly, leaving him feeling uneasy and on edge. Meanwhile, Tracey White spent the entire night wandering the location, capturing the most breathtaking occurrences on camera. She even managed to capture the eerie sight of a kettle turning on and boiling on its own, seemingly on demand at times. Adding to the layers of our investigation, Tracy Simpson and Louise Walker also spent the night, capturing additional evidence and psychic impressions. Their contributions were invaluable and helped us to create a more complete picture of the strange and unexplained events that night.
