6 Years of Paranormal Investigation at Bannockburn House: Ghosts, Mysteries, and Haunting History

Paranormal Investigation at Bannockburn House

For Six years, we at Scottish Paranormal have had the privilege of conducting a long-term paranormal investigation at Bannockburn House, an imposing 17th-century mansion steeped in history and intrigue. Known for hosting Bonnie Prince Charlie and as a site of significant Scottish events, it’s a place with layers of stories that still linger. It’s a place that feels alive—not just with its rich history, but with the countless mysteries that still swirl through its halls. As we near the end of our extensive long-term investigations at Bannockburn, I wanted to share the stories and experiences that have shaped our journey here. This isn’t just about what’s in the history books; it’s about the very heartbeat of the house—the whispers, the shadows, and the souls that may still linger.

The House and Its Haunted History

Bannockburn House, built in 1675 by Sir Hugh Paterson, has witnessed the highs and lows of Scottish history. From its beginnings as the grand vision of a prominent lawyer to its role in hosting Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746, the house has always stood at the crossroads of history. It was here that Charles Edward Stuart met Clementina Walkinshaw, sparking a love story that would later unfold across Europe. But those historical chapters are only part of what makes Bannockburn House so captivating.

The paranormal side of Bannockburn is woven just as deeply into the fabric of this mansion. Over these years, we’ve seen more than just old stone walls—we’ve seen a glimpse into another realm.

The Lady in the Balcony

One of the most vivid experiences took place during a rare public paranormal night at Bannockburn. It was on the balcony that several witnesses saw what we can only describe as a female apparition. We don’t know who she is—maybe a member of the household, maybe a staff member—but her presence is undeniable. Some mediums believe she met a tragic end, perhaps tied to a love affair with a gardener. This isn’t just a ghost story; it’s a lingering sadness that echoes through time. In our audio sessions, it feels as if she wants her story told, yet remains elusive, like a whisper in the wind.

Some of our club members have even taken photographs in this area. One such photo by Gillian Burgan, who is also a volunteer at the house, showed a misty-type figure standing at the door. A trick of the light? Maybe the cold seeping in and a natural occurrence, or perhaps the lady in question watching us—this is part of the mystery we tried to uncover.

The Haunting Presence

This house has its lighter spirits, but it also has darker corners. Some of our team, as well as volunteers working to restore the house, have reported an overwhelming sensation—the feeling of being watched, of something lurking just out of sight. During our time here, we’ve encountered strange activity in the lower corridors: battery drainages, flashing lights, and even a door handle rattling violently on its own—an event that shook a sceptic on our team to their core.

We’ve often wondered if the land itself holds some power over the house. There are whispers of a Roman Road running nearby, and of course, Bannockburn is just a stone’s throw away from the site of one of Scotland’s most significant battles. Perhaps the echoes of history are louder here, replaying again and again, capturing those who pass through. Could it be that the energy of past events is imprinted on the land, influencing the experiences of those who enter? The battles, the romances, and the tragedies—all may have left a residual mark, manifesting as the paranormal activity we continue to encounter.

Chris Fleming at Bannockburn House

Chris Fleming and I conducted prayers for the soldiers near the house, away from the investigation and production cameras, out of respect for the spirits said to walk the lands. These prayers were intended to bring peace to the soldiers, acknowledging their sacrifices and offering a sense of closure, which we felt was important given the history of conflict surrounding the area.

Collecting the Evidence

Our team has spent countless nights in Bannockburn House, gathering terabytes of data, including EVPs (electronic voice phenomena), infrared video recordings, and unexplained EMF readings. We’ve captured unexplainable voices, footsteps, even doors that seemed to have a will of their own. We’ve shared some of these moments with the public—sometimes during live investigations, other times through careful releases of footage and audio. And still, the house keeps its secrets close. Despite all the hours, all the evidence, there’s a sense that we’ve only scratched the surface of what truly lies within these walls.

Our journey at Bannockburn has been more than just an investigation; it’s been a partnership—with the house, with the trust that has preserved it, and with the spirits that may still call it home. From flickering lights to whispered voices, Bannockburn House has left an indelible mark on all of us, a haunting echo of the past that refuses to be silenced.

A Legacy of Mystery

As we bring our investigations at Bannockburn to a close, there’s one thing I know for sure: this house will continue to captivate all who step through its doors. Whether it’s for its historical significance, its architectural beauty, or the promise of a brush with the unknown, Bannockburn House will live on—both as a preserved piece of Scotland’s heritage and as a living, breathing enigma.

The spirits here may not reveal all their secrets, but for those willing to look and listen, Bannockburn House will always have a story to tell.
